Chalazion
Eyes are the main organ of vision and a sense organ too. Healthy eyes are essential part of our life.
Meibomian glands are a kind of sebaceous glands present in our eyes. They are also known as tarsal glands. They are located at the rim of eyelids. Their main function is to supply a thick and oily substance called Meibum.
Meibum is released in tear film of eye and gets drained along with the tears. This meibum protects eyes and prevents spillage of tears. Also it helps in completely closing the eyelids when we sleep, so that there is no drying of eyes. There are 30 to 50 glands in number and are present in bother upper and lower eyelid. The oily secretion if blocked gets accumulated in the gland and forms lump.
Chalazion is the blockage and subsequent inflammation of one of these glands which results in lump formation. This oily substance gets accumulated and may sometime break under pressure and get released in tissue causing inflammation and scar formation.
Chalazion is usually confused with Stye (Hordeolum). Styes are mostly on the lid margin. Styes are infectious condition while Chalazion is not infectious but an inflammatory response of body.
Homeopathic Treatment and local warm compress application to your eyes can help you reduce and manage the symptoms of Chalazion. Also constitutional homeopathic medicines remove the predisposition towards recurrent Chalazia as seen in few people.
Chalazion is an upper eyelid cyst. The blockage of meibomian gland of eye may result in its inflammation, forming the cyst.
There are usually 30 to 50 Meibomian Glands present in bother upper and lower eyelid. They secrete oily substance which lubricates eyes but if blocked the substance gets accumulated in the gland and forms lump. This lump is called Chalazion. View Causes of Chalazion.
Chalazion is often confused with Stye (Hordeolum). Styes are mostly on the lid margin. Styes are infectious condition while Chalazion is not infectious but an inflammatory response of body. Mostly they are painless but if superseded infection affects them they can be very painful. It is a common condition affecting the eyelid in both children and adults.
- Chalazion is a very common condition
- It can affect people of all ages but is most common in adults
- It is benign and mostly painless
- It is not a tumor or growth
- It is not contagious
- It can be seen in both upper and lower eyelid but more common in upper eyelid
- Usually they are small but may grow significantly to be cosmetically unpleasant
WHAT HAPPENS IN CHALAZION?
- Swelling or lump in eyelid (mostly in upper eyelid)
- Tenderness of eyelid
- Increased tear formation
- Feeling of heaviness in eyelid
- Photophobia
WHAT CAN CHALAZION LEAD TO?
- Chalazion is a potentially harmless condition but at the same time it is capable of growing to a big size and may then impact your vision.
- Also it can make you go under the knife. Surgery has many risks and complications associated with it and it can also leave scar mark behind which may lead to cosmetic issues.
- Though it is not an infectious condition but secondary bacterial infection can affect Chalazion and can cause severe pain and other systemic complications. It can cause a dangerous infectious condition called Orbital Cellulitis, where if proper treatment is not received, infection can reach brain or spread through body causing sepsis. Brain infection can be life threatening too. Although such situation is rare Chalazion should not be ignored.
- Moreover many people can have a predisposition towards recurrent Chalazia, which can lead to repeated problems in eye. These repeated Chalazia if not addressed properly can cause astigmatism. Astigmatism is the abnormal curvature of cornea. It can cause difficulty in proper vision.
- Chalazia looks like a lump on eyelid and can cause significant cosmetic disfigurement of eyes and may become a problem in appearance. Progressive Chalazion can lead to disfigurement of eyelids. Chalazia can also cause eyelash loss.
Symptoms
- Lump on eyelid: Swelling may develop in eyelid, upper or lower depending on location of blockage of tarsal gland. This swelling may grow in size gradually and may continue to grow for weeks. This swelling appears as a lump and feels hard on touching.
- Pain: Initially there may be some irritation. Mostly there is no pain but sometimes tenderness, redness and warmth may be there if there is superseded infection. This is chief feature in symptoms of chalazion.
- Change in vision: Pressure put by Chalazion may distort eyeball affecting vision. Vision may be blurred, blocked, double etc. These are important symptoms of chalazion.
- Photophobia: Patient may feel sensitivity in eyes on seeing towards light. They can experience burning, smarting or irritation in eyes. This is leading feature in symptoms of chalazion.
- Increased tear formation (lacrymation) in eyes.
- Feeling of heaviness on eyelid due to lump.
These are important symptoms of chalazion.
Causes
The main cause of Chalazion is obstruction and blockage of oil secreting gland called Meibomian Gland or tarsal gland resulting in accumulation of oil inside the blockage and forming lump or cyst . Dirt, grease or even other conditions can cause blockage resulting in difficulty in drainage of oil secretion which is used in lubrication of eyes. These are leading causes of chalazion. Conditions which can result in blockage are-
- Poor eye hygiene can result in dirt and grease blocking the gland opening
- Styes can lead to Chalazion also vice versa can be true
- Skin infections like Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, acne rosacea, eczema can also cause Chalazion
- Infection of eyelids (blepharitis) can also cause Chalazion
- Rarely skin cancer can cause repeated Chalazion
These are significant causes of chalazion.
Chalazion though is considered mostly a harmless condition but can cause many complications-
- Infection of Chalazion and Orbital Cellulitis: Chalazia are not infected in general. Accumulated fluid in Chalazion is sterile but sometimes it can get infected and that infection can rapidly spread in whole eyelids and eyes resulting in extreme redness, tenderness, swelling, etc. This can cause difficulty in opening the eyelid. It can lead to fever, chills, popping out of eyes, photophobia. This results in orbital Cellulitis which is a serious situation and needs immediate medical attention.
- Astigmatism: Pressure on cornea by a large Chalazion can cause Astigmatism. Astigmatism is the abnormal curvature of cornea. It can cause difficulty in proper vision. This can raise the need to go under knife.
- Recurrence: Mostly Chalazion once subsides will not come back but in few it may recur again and again.
- Loss of eyelash: Progressive Chalazion may lead to loss of eyelashes.
- Dry eye: Though rare but blockage of oil producing Meibomian gland can cause dry eyes. Since oil lubricates eye, multiple Chalazia are risks for dry eyes.
- Cosmetic problems: Lump on eyelid can cause significant cosmetic disfigurement of eyes and become a problem in appearance. Progressive Chalazion can lead to disfigurement of eyelids. Also healed Chalazion or surgery for its removal may leave scar on eyelid.
